I think the time is ripe for any moderate Republican - Marijo

The time is right for any moderate - regardless of party - to keep MPC from taking office (again). In all seriousness, how long will it be before we move away from a "party system" (if ever)? I'm a Democrat, but for me, just about every Democrat after Carter was a "well, they're not great, but they're better than the Republican overall." Any thoughts?

I agree in principle and appreciate your yearning for something beyond parties. The reality is that the primaries are by nature partisan: an intra-party struggle whose winner gets to move to the general election.

I think MAINstream members and friends benefit when a moderate Republican who supports our principles makes it out of their primary and then faces a democrat who supports our principles.

This is why we will likely encourage our members to switch parties to vote in the primary that is of most importance in their area. You might think about this as one way of not fully cooperating with either party.

John Edwards taking public financing = the end of his viability.

Interesting you should mention public financing. I was in a political discussion last weekend with a group of people (who for the most part did not know each other) who came together to talk about all things political.

Public financing came up in several parts of the conversation from several different people as an idea that some see as a possible way of making the political process more accessible. Nobody much thinks it will happen in ways that are meaningful. We didn't spend lots of time on it, but "it" seem to represent people's yearning for something that works better than what we have today.

Sound bites, loud rhetoric typically either misleading or flat out false, and short term thinking all seem to be tied to money.

We decided to keep talking about this and whatever else comes up.

In principle I totally agree with main*blogger about public financing. Surely making the political process more accessible and less 'shrill' media-wise is part of the spirit of public financing rules. However...Edwards may have pulled a "Kerry" and put himself in a position where he might indeed win the primary, but then will have to sit for six months while the Republicans beat him senseless. I wouldn't be at all unhappy if Edwards won the Democratic nomination, although he's not my favorite at this point. Regardless, I just fear that this public finance decision is too great of a risk particularly with how much of the political season we have yet to go. On the Republican side -- Giuliani with his "let he without sin cast the first stone". Not helpin' himself. I say: No chance for the nomination.

Since this is a blog, I'm not overly worried about burning too much credibility, but...what do y'all think about a Gore-Obama Democratic ticket?

A comment was offered about the announcements that Mary Pilcher Cook and Patrick Regan are running for the KS Senate seat currently held by Nick Jordan.

The question was raised about whether or not a moderate could enter the race and benefit from the split of the conservative vote between Cook and Regan.
